CRITICAL Java Updates: Mac OS X 10.6 Update 7 and 10.7 Update 2012-002 (formerly 001)

For users of Mac OS X 10.7, Java update 2012-002 has been released today to correct an error in the .DMG installation file for 2012-001. The 2012-001 installer has been withdrawn. I interpret this to mean that the flaw in 001 was critical. Therefore, please install Java for OS X 2012-002 IMMEDIATELY! It has been reported that over 600,000 (not a typo) Macs are now infected with the Flashback Trojan horse / botnet malware! This is unprecedented in Mac history. This Java update kills off a Drive-By method of Mac infection by the Flashback malware.]

If you haven't already installed the latest Java update for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and 10.7 Lion, INSTALL IT NOW. No excuses. The best method of installation in this case is via Software Update, available under the Apple menu. There is currently a problem with the direct download version for 10.7 whereby it FAILs the fsck check the OS runs during DMG file verification. See details below.

This particular update is CRITICAL because there is an active exploit against the older version of Java that results in Drive-By infection of Mac machines without requiring the user to provide a password. This is unheard of on Macs. It is specifically a Java problem, NOT a Mac OS X problem. Don't blame Apple. Blame the lazy crapcoders at ORACLE.

Windows users have had this particular Java update for MONTHS. Supposedly Apple and Oracle have an arrangement whereby Oracle are now writing Mac updates for Java. But that arrangement is FAILing.

Earlier today I posted reviews of this update at both VersionTracker/CNET and MacUpdate. I have provided a somewhat redundant summary below which with details about how to turn OFF Java, which I highly recommend, as well as some rant action.

Good: This CRUCIAL Java update patches an active exploit against Macs. Better a late update than never. Java is occasionally useful.

Bad: Java is now one of the most INSECURE Internet technologies. If you don't use Java, TURN IT OFF! Oracle and Apple are NOT providing Mac Java updates in a timely manner. This Java update for Mac provides an update that Windows users have had for months. For over a week, there has been an active malware exploit against Mac users with the unpatched version of Java.

It is terrific that Apple jumped on this exploit so quickly. However, Apple users MUST be provided with Java patches at the same time as Windows users. Delaying Java patches for Mac users is NOT acceptable.

I have verified that the direct download file of the 10.7 version of Java for OS X 2012-001,  FAILs the Mac OS X fsck check during file verification. This is evident in the Console. This is BAD. If you used this downloaded installer, IMMEDIATELY update to the Java for OS X 2012-002 installer!

The BEST way to install this update is from Software Update. You will find it under your Mac's Apple menu. This installation works perfectly.



Now For My Rant:


Java has become a BANE of the Internet. I have turned it OFF. I am sick of the recent Java exploits against Mac users. I don't deal with it. I suggest you turn Java OFF as well, unless you use it regularly.

HOW TO TURN OFF JAVA: 

If you use multiple web browsers (I use six) then the best and simplest way to turn Java OFF is via the Java Preferences app found in your Mac's Utilities folder. Follow these steps:

1) Open the Java Preferences app.


2) Under the 'General' tab, check OFF "Enable applet plug-in and Web Start applications". (Mac OS X 10.6 users: Instead uncheck the plugins for Java SE 6 in the box inside the window).

3) Quit the Java Preferences app.

4) VERIFY IT'S OFF: Open the Java Preferences app, again. Verify that the "Enable..." checkbox remains OFF. If you find it on again, check the damned thing OFF again. Quit Java Preferences. Verify AGAIN as required.

I add this VERIFY step because I personally have seen this checkbox turn on again. If you want to be extra-special certain the box doesn't turn on again, you can go down to the box under the 'General' tab and turn OFF both 64 and 32-bit "Java SE 6", then turn off "Enable". That definitely does the trick.

My #2 Rant: 


SHAME ON ORACLE. That company has RUINED OpenOffice. The LibreOffice branch is now off and running and far superior, leaving the source OpenOffice project irrelevant. Oracle has been just as obtuse with Java, which is now a DETRIMENT to the Internet.

Maybe Java will be made open source, at long last. That would help. Perhaps great developers like those on the LibreOffice team will grab it and make Java seriously great. Until then, BEWARE OF JAVA. I fully expect more Java exploit malware to come. (o_0)

Remember when Java was supposed to be 100% secure, never able to access your computer directly, entirely safe in its sandboxed little Just-In-Time runtime machine? Remember 'write once, run anywhere'? Remember 'secure memory management'? Fun times in Fantasy Land.

64-bit 7ista Twice Hacked via both IE 8 and Firefox 3!
The End Is Nigh!


I should also mention that both Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and the iPhone got hacked via Safari. Just doing a little back-at-you priority swapping. These days it is a BIG DEAL when Mac OS X gets hacked because of its reputation as the safest GUI OS on the planet. Hacking Windows is ho hum because it happens every day.

Congratulations to all the hackers and thank you for making it clear that Internet surfing can be dangerous no matter the operating system or web browser. Details of each zero day hack are not published until they have been addressed by the companies or groups in charge of affected programs and operating systems. When the Mac OS X hacks have been published, I'll report them and provide links here.

I'll also post more from CanSecWest as it progresses. Dr. Charlie Miller will be presenting his 20 Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard hacks.

The successful hacking of Windows 7ista is of particular interest because it involved bypassing the much lauded ASLR (Address Space Layout Randomization) and DEP (Data Execution Prevention) built into 7ista. So much for those security technologies!

In each hack the victim computers were directed to websites containing exploit code. I'm going to hazard a wild guess that the sites used code written at least in part in the catastrophic mess known as ECMAScript, aka JavaScript/JScript. Readers of this blog will already know my low opinion of this scripting language and my desire that it be banished from the Internet forever. Listeners to the SecurityNow Podcast know that Steve Gibson of Gibson Research Corporation (GRC) called out ECMAScript as dangerous years ago. He recommends surfing the net with scripting turned OFF in all web browsers by default, only turning it on at trusted websites.

Java exploits are also well known at this time, indicating the need to also turn off Java while surfing the net, except again at trusted websites. What a shame.

(Note that JavaScript and Java have nothing whatsoever to do with each other apart from a similar name caused by a marketing moron deal between Netscape and Sun Microsystems, both companies now defunct).

Adobe Shockwave Player v11.5.0.600 & Apple vs. Java Insecurity

In its recent attempt to get serious about application security, last week Adobe released Shockwave Player v11.5.0.600 for Mac. Oddly, they released the Windows version a week later. I say oddly because Mac versions of Adobe software are almost always late. It's amusing to see a swap for a change. Now if only Adobe would release the many years delayed 64 bit versions of their applications. Hint hint Adobe.

MacWorld messed up today (6/24) and reported that the Adobe security bulletin about the Windows version 11.5.0.600 of Shockwave Player had anything to do with the Mac version. So I posted a reply comment, which you'll find below. After I posted my comment I visited the Adobe site to find any news about the Mac version. There isn't any. I did however learn that Shockwave Player is compatible with Mac OS X Tiger. That's good to know. I dug around in the installer package and found nothing there as well. If you find anything relevant to Mac security improvements in Shockwave Player v11.5.0.600, please leave a comment.

Here is my comment to MacWorld regarding Adobe Shockwave Player. It is also relevant to Apple's slow poke response to Java security problems:

A couple points:

1) The Adobe Security Bulletin (it's not a blog) is specific to the Windows version ONLY, which apparently was just finished and released. The Mac version of Adobe Shockwave Player v11.5.0.600 was released a week ago on June 16th. Adobe didn't post a security bulletin for the Mac version. And that means what?!

2) bousozoku sez: "Adobe seems to be the only company slower than Apple at taking care of security concerns."

Adobe's attention to security went into deep decline until this past month.

In the meantime, Apple have been improving their attention to security exponentially over the last couple years. It appears to be in response to both the moronic anti-Apple security FUD-fest instigated by Symantec in August 2005, and the White Hat focus on Apple security bugs and vulnerabilities. As is typical with Apple, drag them through the press and they respond.

Where Apple recently fell on their face was with regards to a slew of vulnerabilities in the mess known as Java. Apple were over 6 months behind in Java patches. Sadly, Apple's incredibly slow response to Java updates is consistent. Never has Apple had a serious Java team. Of course one reason is that Apple has to do ALL the work to provide Mac OS X Java updates. Sun provides nothing.

Meanwhile, despite Microsoft's outright hatred of all things Java, to the extent that they were found guilty in court of attempting to destroy Java via their J++ monstrosity, Sun Microsystems write and provide all Windows Java updates. Microsoft never has to lift a finger. That is the single sole reason Windows gets Java updates before Mac OS X. Hey thanks Sun. Sorry you're dead.

Java is DANGER! Apple is SLOW POKE!

One of my favorite jabs at the anti-Mac security FUD mongers is to point out that their FUD attack party, ongoing since it was started by Symantec way back in August 2005, has happily prodded Apple to get serious about Mac OS X security updates. I then extend them a hearty handshake and gleefully, maniacally, laugh.

However, Mac security mavens point out that Apple is still a slow poke. Damned right! There are a couple short articles over at Intego about an ongoing security hole in the current implementation of Java in Mac OS X:

To defenders of the faith, such as myself, this is annoying. First off, we get to be poked by the FUD mongers with the 'see, I told you' routine. Second off, I am so sick of the corrosion that has happened to the great and shiny image in the sky of Java being this ultra-safe, can't break into your computer, can't hurt you, technology. Yeah, and Sun is now no more. Justice is served. But we're stuck with the mess as a web standard.

Mac Security Update 2009-001, Java Updates and a Safari for Windows Update

Ahead is a quick analysis of what is covered in the update, along with comments.

This security update is specifically for computers updated to Mac OS X 10.4.11 and 10.5.6, both client and server. Presumably it will be integrated into 10.5.7 when it's available.

There are 28 specific security updates including fixes for 48 documented vulnerabilities, making this another whopper relative to the updates we used to get from Apple a couple years back. I like that. The updates cover some interesting aspects of the Mac OS X Apple have not previously addressed. This indicates to me that over time they are carefully combing through aspects of the OS rather than randomly poking around or only responding as they receive vulnerability reports from third parties.

As ever, there are several buffer overflow patches. Memory management remains one of the banes of contemporary coding. I'm getting the idea that this problem won't go away until we invent an AI that can self-analyze its own computer code. It could happen!

A surprising trend in this update is the patching of security problems introduced specifically in Mac OS X 10.5.6. Ahem Apple. Ahem beta testers.

Cookies: There are a couple repairs for cookie problems introduced into the CFNetwork process in Mac OS X 10.5.6.

Printing: Included is a CUPS update as well as a repair of an error in the csregprinter process that allowed system privileges escalation.

Scripting: There are several patches provided for python and one for perl.

Remote Apple Events: There are a couple buffer overflow / out-of-bounds memory access patches.

SMB: Apple themselves patched a couple buffer problems, which is interesting. It's good to see Apple serious about compatibility with Windows networks.

X11: There are a collection of patches regarding font handling, user privilege plundering and several other vulnerabilites in the X11 server.

JavaScript: Here's another bane of contemporary coding. This time the patch is to Safari's RSS handling of feed URLs.

Mail services: A pair of patches are made to fetchmail and another pair to SquirrelMail.

Video: Yet another problem with maliciously crafted media files. This time a patch is provided for the Pixlet codec.

Other patched services include:

AFP Server
CarbonCore's Resource Manager
Certificate Assistant
CoreText
DS Tools: dscl
Folder Manager
FSEvents framework: fseventsd
Network Time
Server Manager: servermgrd
XTerm

And included is a security updated version of ClamAV for both 10.4 and 10.5 Server.

The Java security vulnerabilities that were patched include maliciously written web page Java applets allowing user privilege plundering. These problems weren't in Apple's implementation but in Java itself. SOS: Java was supposed to be as safe as a sandbox. Yeah, a sandbox full of land sharks.

My recommendation for security fanatics, as per recommendations from security expert Steve Gibson: If you don't want to take chances with hacker perpetrated JavaScript and Java, use a browser that lets you turn on support for both protocols on a site by site basis. As with using Little Snitch, it can be a PITA dithering around with little stuff on the net. But the geek in me adjusted such that I use site by site service control all the time. The browser I use for this purpose is OmniWeb. It's the bells and whistles web browser for Mac OS X and is well worth paying for if you like its abundant added features. You can also rig FireFox to handle site by site services as well. Camino and Safari are sadly site specific clueless. I haven't tested other browsers.
